| Public Art Projects Public art helps to shape a community’s identity, while building culture and fostering a sense of civic pride. The Long Beach Redevelopment Agency has incorporated public art throughout our project areas as an innovative revitalization tool, and we’re proud of our commitment to funding public art projects.
We believe public art is a creative way to celebrate the city’s unique culture while encouraging public-private partnerships, furthering sustainability in RDA projects and enhancing community pride. To complement the numerous projects the RDA funds throughout our city, in 1989 we established the 1% for Public Art program. Through this program, all new projects over $250,000 in Redevelopment Project Areas are required to contribute 1% of construction costs towards funding public art.
To assist with the allocation of the 1% program funds, the RDA has partnered with the Arts Council of Long Beach. By working together, the two agencies are able to reach a broad base of artists with diverse perspectives and talents, while encouraging interest in Long Beach as a venue for their craft.
The slide show below highlights just a few of the public arts installations throughout Long Beach.
